Is a PDF catalogue enough for configurable products?
Compare a PDF catalogue with guided product selection through a discontinued option, accessory dependency and enquiry handoff exercise.
Table of contents
A PDF catalogue is useful for browsing a range and sharing product information. Guided configuration becomes valuable when the right product depends on previous choices and the enquiry needs a precise specification. The question is not whether the document looks modern; it is whether a buyer can select a currently supported combination without reconstructing the manufacturer's rules.
Follow the references a customer actually uses
Take an enquiry that contains a screenshot, a page number and an accessory name. Can the salesperson identify the catalogue edition, model and requested combination? A customer may retain a downloaded document long after the website has changed. Removing a PDF link does not remove existing copies.
A controlled configurator can identify the catalogue version used for a saved selection. The buying exercise must still check what happens to an older project when a selected finish or accessory is withdrawn.
Compare one dependent decision
Choose a screen that is available for only some widths and mounting arrangements. In the PDF process, ask a new salesperson to find the applicable restriction, select the correct reference and prepare an enquiry. In the guided process, ask the same person to make the selection and explain an unavailable option.
Neither process should guess the missing information. A well-written catalogue may make the restriction very clear. A poorly configured website may allow an invalid product despite presenting a polished model.
| Catalogue task | Evidence worth collecting |
|---|---|
| Find the current model | Product and edition references |
| Understand an accessory restriction | A clear explanation at the decision point |
| Ask about an unsupported choice | An enquiry retaining the attempted selection |
| Reopen an earlier specification | Retained version and review status |
Retain downloadable information with a defined purpose
A configurator does not make every PDF unnecessary. Installation instructions, maintenance information and an issued offer are different documents. Decide which are general product information and which must correspond to the accepted configuration.
For example, an issued quotation should identify the selected model and scope. A general brochure should not be presented as the manufacturing instruction for that order. Keeping these purposes distinct reduces the chance that someone follows an attractive but irrelevant drawing.
Define the Configurix handoff around the enquiry
A guided-selling implementation can connect product questions, available combinations and a structured enquiry. Bring your current catalogue and several real enquiry formats to a Configurix discussion, with customer details removed where they are not needed. Agree which references and unresolved questions must reach the salesperson.
The improvement should be observable: fewer missing product decisions or less interpretation before a useful conversation. Do not judge the project only by whether customers open more pages.
Should we remove all downloadable catalogues?
No. Keep documents that help buyers and partners. Give them an identifiable edition and a clear route to current product information.
Is a guided selector always a full 3D configurator?
No. Questions and rule-based selections may provide value without a detailed interactive model. Match the visual investment to the decisions buyers need to understand.
